PHYSICAL HUNGER vs SPIRITUAL FOOD.

Some years ago, I woke up one day hungry. Literally starving. I was so ravenous, I felt I could eat paint off the wall. That’s how hungry I was.

The only problem was that I was supposed to be fasting.

At that time, I was spending quite a bit of time with God and the Word, but on this day, I was so hungry, I didn’t think I could concentrate. However, I forced myself to open my Bible, then began to read hungrily. I can’t explain it in words, but I was so physically hungry, I was devouring the Word as I read. I read deeply, hungrily and ravenously, as if I was stuffing myself with the Word instead of real food.

When I was done, I felt I had eaten a 20-course meal at an all-you-can-eat buffet. That’s how physically satiated I felt. The physical hunger had disappeared and my body felt “full.”

I was shocked. I had never experienced such before. I didn’t believe that eating spiritual food could truly satisfy physical hunger.

Later on, I began to hear of other people’s experiences. I read of a nun who for sometime drank only a cup of coffee a day, and would spend hours and hours in the Word – and she put on a lot of weight! She said the Word fed her and made her full.

I didn’t understand it until I had the experience I narrated above and other experiences – and I realised certain things:

(1) Even though we are human, we are first and foremost spirit beings.
(2) The spirit, soul and body are so intertwined that you can mistake the need of one for the other.
(3) There are depths in God and spiritual levels that many Christians will never attain because their flesh is always stronger than their spirit.
(4) Those who will grow their spirit-men far above their flesh and souls will walk in dimensions and physical manifestations that will astound the human mind. It’s already happening.

(5) Many Christians do not understand the cries of their spirit-man. Because of spiritual insensitivity, many people misunderstand their spiritual cravings and try to satisfy them with physical things or activities. For example:

-You are not aware that the constant physical hunger you feel – even after eating your usual meal – is actually your spirit-man saying it is hungry and it has not been fed.

-Your loneliness or desperate desire for emotional bonding can be your spirit-man calling you into a deeper and longer time in God’s presence.

-Your intense sexual desire – especially as a single person – can actually be God calling you into intimate fellowship with Him. Sounds weird, right? I know. But you can experience deep, intimate moments of worship and fellowship with God that you cannot talk about, tweet about, or post about on your Whatsapp status. It affects your very spirit, soul and body.
Just like intimacy between married couples, you can’t talk about the very act publicly. It’s too sacred. Talking about it desecrates the very act – like bringing a third party into your room as you perform spousal duties. Yes, intimacy with God can be that beautiful.

(6) As an aside, that season taught me that God can satisfy every hunger – spiritual, emotional, physical, sexual, psychological. The reason most Christians haven’t experienced His provision in certain areas is because they are not aware He can meet those needs, or they don’t allow Him do so.

But He can.

So, why am I sharing this? Simply because I feel someone needs this. I was getting ready to upload another blog post but this topic came to mind strongly – so I decided to put this up instead.

Maybe you – yes, you – need to put down your plate, and pick up your Bible instead.😁
